Torres del Paine: the practical guide

Patagonia's crown jewel requires three decisions before you book flights: how many days, whether you sleep inside the park, and which reservations you need. This guide settles all three.

The three ways to see the park

1. Full-day tour (the accessible format)

From Puerto Natales (~1.5 h away), by van with a guide: Lake Grey and its icebergs, Salto Grande waterfall, Lake Pehoé and the Paine horns, with guanacos and condors likely all day. No fitness or in-park lodging required. The right choice if you have one day or travel with kids.

2. Base Torres day hike (the star trek)

The hike to the glacial lagoon beneath the three towers: ~19 km round trip, 8–10 hours, with a steep moraine scramble at the end. Demanding but not technical. Doable independently (bus to Laguna Amarga + shuttle) or as a guided day hike with transport from Puerto Natales.

3. The W Trek (4–5 days)

The classic: Base Torres, French Valley and Grey Glacier, sleeping in refugios or campsites. The hard part isn't the hiking — it's booking. Beds and campsites along the W are run by two separate concessionaires and sell out months ahead for December–February. Rule of thumb: no lodging reservations, no W Trek.
