Puerto Varas is the best base for exploring southern Chile: it sits on Lake Llanquihue facing two volcanoes (Osorno and Calbuco), 20 minutes from Puerto Montt airport, and within day-trip range of Chiloé, Petrohué and Cochamó. The town itself is small and walkable, with German heritage, good food, and a lakefront that's hard to beat on a clear day.

The must-sees

1. The lakefront and downtown

Walk east from the Plaza de Armas along the lakefront to the pier and Puerto Chico beach. At sunset, Osorno volcano turns pink. It's free, and the best first taste of the town. Add the Sagrado Corazón church (1915, a heritage building) and a slice of kuchen at any café downtown.

2. Osorno Volcano

About 60 km from town. In summer you can drive or take a tour up to the ski center (1,200 m), where chairlifts run with views over the lake and the Petrohué valley. In winter it's the most accessible ski resort in the area. Bring a jacket even in January — it's always windy up there.

3. Saltos del Petrohué and Lake Todos los Santos

The area's classic: turquoise water crashing between volcanic rocks with Osorno in the background. It sits inside Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park (paid entrance). Pairs perfectly with Osorno on a full-day tour. Full guide to Saltos del Petrohué →

4. Frutillar

30 minutes away. Teatro del Lago, the German Colonial Museum, and the lakefront with the best head-on view of Osorno. Full guide to Frutillar →

5. Chiloé as a day trip

It can be done: the Chacao Channel ferry crossing, Ancud or Castro, stilt houses (palafitos) and UNESCO-listed wooden churches. It's a long day (12+ hours), but if that's all the time you have, it's worth it. With two free days, spend a night in Castro instead.

6. Cochamó Valley

Chile's "Yosemite": granite walls and ancient alerce trees. Requires a mandatory advance booking for the trail to La Junta and reasonable fitness (12 km each way). It's the most demanding excursion on this list, and the most memorable.
