Frutillar is the most charming stop on Lake Llanquihue: German settlers arrived in 1856, the wooden houses are immaculate, and the town's musical calling culminated in Teatro del Lago, one of South America's best venues, built literally over the water. It splits into Frutillar Alto (shops, bus terminal) and Frutillar Bajo (the lakefront and everything you came to see).

What to do

1. Teatro del Lago

The icon. Year-round programming (concerts, opera, the Semanas Musicales season in January-February) and guided tours of the building when there's no show. Even if you don't go inside, the theater's pier is the must-take photo.

2. The lakefront and pier

Two flat kilometers along the lake with Osorno centered right in front — the most symmetrical view on all of Lake Llanquihue. At sunset, the wooden pier fills with photographers for good reason.

3. German Colonial Museum

Historic houses, a mill, and original machinery from the settlers, set in an immaculate park up the hillside. An hour well spent to understand why this area looks the way it does.

4. The kuchen trail

Frutillar takes its kuchen seriously: raspberry, walnut, or streusel crumble. Any tea house along the lakefront delivers; locals tend to prefer the home-baked ones signposted on the inner streets.
