For most travelers, Puerto Montt is a place you pass through: this is where you'll find El Tepual airport, the bus terminal, and the Angelmó pier, where ferries leave for Chiloé and the Carretera Austral. That doesn't mean it isn't worth a couple of hours — the waterfront facing the Reloncaví Sound, the Angelmó market, and a short boat crossing to Isla Tenglo are easy to fit into an afternoon, even if your real plan is to sleep in Puerto Varas, 20 minutes north.
The must-sees
1. Angelmó
The city's best-known market: wool and wood crafts, fresh fish and shellfish, and simple eateries where you eat looking out at the water. Boats leave from the pier for short bay tours at a low price, with views of the city and Isla Tenglo. It's also the terminal for long-haul ferries: Naviera Austral departs from here for Chaitén, the northern gateway to the Carretera Austral.
2. Isla Tenglo
The first of the Reloncaví islands, separated from the mainland by barely a couple hundred meters. Small boats cross in minutes from a pier near Angelmó. A roughly 20-minute walk along a dirt path leads to the Cruz de Tenglo, with panoramic views of the city and, on a clear day, the Osorno, Calbuco and Tronador volcanoes.
3. The waterfront and the Plaza de Armas
Walk from the Angelmó area toward downtown along the waterfront, with the Reloncaví Sound on one side and the city climbing the hill on the other. On the Plaza de Armas stands the Cathedral (Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen), built starting in 1856 — just three years after the city was founded — with a Doric-columned facade reminiscent of the Parthenon and a structure of native alerce wood. It's Puerto Montt's oldest heritage building.
4. El Tepual airport, the gateway south
Most flights to southern Chile land here (airport code PMC), about 15-20 minutes from downtown. If you're arriving from elsewhere and your real destination is Puerto Varas, Chiloé or the Carretera Austral, this is your mandatory entry — or exit — point.
5. On to Chiloé or the Carretera Austral
Puerto Montt is the real starting point for two classic southern routes: to Chiloé via Pargua (about 57 km, ~1 hour by car, then a ~30-minute Chacao Channel ferry); to the Carretera Austral, overland to Hornopirén (about 110 km, mostly paved) or directly on the Naviera Austral ferry from Angelmó to Chaitén (about 9 hours at sea).
