San Pedro de Atacama: the practical guide

The driest desert on Earth packs geysers, turquoise lagoons, Martian valleys and the best night sky on the planet around an adobe town at 2,400 m.

The must-sees
1. El Tatio Geysers
The highest geothermal field in the world (4,320 m), at 6 a.m. and below freezing: the fumaroles only show up in the cold of sunrise. It's the earliest excursion and the one that most demands acclimatization — never do it on your first day.
2. Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley)
15 minutes from town: dunes, salt ridges and stone amphitheaters that turn red at sunset. It's the perfect excursion for arrival day since it's almost at the same altitude as the town.
3. Altiplano lagoons and Piedras Rojas
Miscanti and Miñiques (4,100 m) mirroring volcanoes, the Atacama salt flat with flamingos at Chaxa lagoon, and Piedras Rojas as the grand finale. A full day, the most scenic of them all.
4. Astronomy tour
Atacama has the clearest sky on the planet — that's why the world's largest observatories are here. Night tours with telescopes and a guide are worth every peso; avoid full-moon nights.
5. Cejar or Baltinache lagoons
Float in water saltier than the Dead Sea (Cejar) or explore the seven hidden lagoons (Baltinache, quieter). Either one is a half-day trip.

- How to get there: fly into Calama (CJC) + a 1 h 20 min transfer to town.

- Weather: 25 °C (77 °F) by day, below freezing at El Tatio at sunrise: pack layers and a hat even in summer.
- Cash: community entrance fees are paid in cash; town ATMs run dry in high season.
- Altiplano winter: in January-February it can rain in the altiplano and roads may close temporarily; keep a backup plan in your itinerary.
FAQ
How many days?
4 is ideal, 3 is tight: Valle de la Luna on arrival day, El Tatio on day two or three, altiplano lagoons as a full day, astronomy tour any night without a full moon.
Is the altitude a problem?
Not in town; El Tatio and Piedras Rojas do require acclimatizing first. Stay hydrated and tackle excursions in ascending order.
Book ahead?
Yes in high season (El Tatio and astronomy tours sell out); in low season a day's notice in town is enough.
